This event has traditionally been dominated by Cuban riders including many multi-year winners (Eduardo Alonso won six in the 1980s) but Todd Herriott of the U.S. managed to pull off a win in 2003. This race has a long history although it has missed a few years here and there including nine consecutive years in the 1990s.
